For our first-ever monthly Creative Spotlight, we had to opportunity to interview the creative behind LovelyBoy Designs, a UK-based brand that creates motivational and uplifting artwork.
Hi, Saba! It’s our absolutely pleasure to have you as our first-ever guest for our Creative Spotlight here in ATOW. It would be great if you could introduce yourself to the ATOW community.
Hi! My name is Saba. I’m from Belfast, Northern Ireland and currently living in London. I have worked as a fashion designer for the last 9 years and I have just taken the plunge to become self employed! I am a freelancer and designer of all the products at Lovelyboy!
As an artist, it must be challenging to feel inspired every single time. What do you do when you’re feeling uninspired or unmotivated to create?
When I feel uninspired or unmotivated, I’m more likely lacking energy. Something thats worked for me to get my creative juices flowing is moving! Whether it’s going for a walk, run or doing some yoga. Once I feel more energised, I look to different mediums to get my inspiration such as Pinterest, Instagram, books, conversations, or movies. The inspiration around us is endless and can be sparked at any moment!
Do you happen to have a morning routine?
Yep! I’m not really a morning person at all; however, I do feel like a morning routine for me is necessary to get the day started on a positive note. I wake up, make my bed, make a hot cup of tea or coffee (depending on how tired I am) and go through my diary on what I need to do for the day. Planning is a must for me as my days are packed.
What are five things we can definitely find on your desk?
(1) My Mac for working; (2) A Teacup as I’m a tea addict! (3) My daily planner: My days are packed morning to night so I need to make sure I time block to keep on top of my To do list! (4) Dried flowers for some eye candy; (5) Post-its for little reminders
You currently have more than 14K followers on Instagram. What advice would you give to creatives that have just started their own page on Instagram?
Bite the bullet and do it! And, have fun along the way! Take the pressure off yourself and just start creating. If you’re still finding your own style, then experiment as much as you can to find your groove. Practice makes perfect. Research into your favourite artists and don’t be scared to change your style along the way. Most importantly, stay consistent and keep your audience engaged.
You also have an Etsy shop! When and how did you decide to open it?
Yes, I have an Etsy store and I have just launched my own website! Check it out as I have promotions running this month for my launch! I started my Etsy shop in 2017 as a hobby and to make some extra money. I started of with greeting cards and personalised cards and grew my range from there to prints, wrapping paper, face masks and much more!
Were there challenges in starting your own creative business? What were they and how did you overcome them?
I have daily struggles as I still feel like I am starting out. There’s so much that goes into running a business that it can be overwhelming such as coming up with new ideas, making the product, packaging, marketing, building a website, pricing and so much more! I have had to teach myself (and I am still learning) a lot as I have no background or experience in selling or e-commerce. Thankfully, there’s so much free support out there on Google and Youtube which I’m grateful for. I have had to motivate myself and having a community around me really helps.
What advice would you give to creatives that have not started their own shop yet but are looking to do so soon?
If you never start, you will never know what you can achieve. Don’t be afraid of taking the risk if its something you want to do. Google is your friend and you can get answers to anything online, which is so amazing! Also, there is a market for everything so your product will sell! Just learn how to market your product to get it in front of potential customers and you’ll be fine. Be consistent and believe in yourself!
Thank you so much for taking the time to share some insights into your creative business! We wish you all the best with LovelyBoy Designs!
Stay tuned for Saba’s IG Takeover this February!
